W & W Communications Questions & Answers
==========================================================================
Q: The door runs fine in local mode, but it never sends anything out the
COM port. What is wrong?
A: The most common cause of this is failure to pass the node number to the
batch file generated by the install program. If you copied portions of
the batch file into another batch file that you use for your BBS, then
make sure that the line that has -Node=%1 on it has been changed to
reflect your actual node number, since %1 is used to pass parameters
and will contain nothing inside the BBS batch file. Try changing it to
-Node=1 for example.
The second most common cause of this is Sysop's failing to read the
Sysop Documentation. All versions of our doors since April 1992 have
used a new command line which needs to be followed to operate the door
successfully -- the old batch files won't work.
Q: I get an "Error -6: Not set up" whenever I try to run the door with the
BBS. What is wrong?
A: This is usually caused by trying to use the -FOSSIL option with older
versions of our doors. In earlier versions, this option was not
implemented correctly and would fail to connect with the FOSSIL driver.
This has since been corrected -- download the latest version from the
Holodeck BBS at (408) 248-0869 (FIDO 1:143/322).
Q: Star Fight doesn't seem to want to run. All of your other doors work
fine. Why is this one not working?
A: Providing you've set them all up identically, chances are you're not
giving Star Fight enough memory to run. Star Fight requires at least
500K of conventional memory to be free when it loads. Anything less
than this and it probably will not function properly.
Q: I can't get the door to run at all! It complains about either not
being able to find a file, or something about an invalid argument.
What is wrong?
A: There are probably some 0 byte data files in the data directory. This
is usually caused by having SHARE partially loaded such that attempts
to detect its presence succeed, but key portions of its functionality
(record locking, in this case) are not actually present. Windows is a
prime candidate for doing this -- if you don't explicitly load SHARE
in your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, it will load a minimal subset for
you automatically. To remedy the problem, load SHARE in your
CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT (if you put it in AUTOEXEC.BAT, make sure it
runs BEFORE Windows or any of the other multi-taskers!) and then delete
all the data files in the door directory (usually in a directory called
DATA, although they may be in other places as well...the safest bet is
to just remove the entire door directory and re-install from scratch).
Once this is accomplished (and you've rebooted to get SHARE loaded
properly), try running the game again -- everything should work just
fine. NOTE for DOS 5 or WINDOWS USERS: Both DOS 5 and Windows load a
subset of SHARE which, unfortunately, behaves as if it is the real
thing when asked if it is present. This will cause many problems with
our doors, since we expect some functionality to present in SHARE which
isn't there in these subsets. The remedy is as above: load SHARE in
your CONFIG.SYS to force the real one to be loaded.
Q: What happened to Mycroft? Why are you distributing his doors?
A: First off, the doors we distribute we also write -- they were never his
to begin with. We had agreed to let him distribute our software. This
turned out to be a big mistake and we have since terminated all
relations with him. He owed us a fair amount of money at that time and
was taken to court to settle the problem. A judgement was awarded to
us...collecting it, however, is turning out to be problematic, as other
agencies have already put their liens against him for substantial
amounts of money. If you know of anyone who is mistakenly sending
money to Mycroft Systems/Mike Bayley for one of the doors we
distribute, please inform them of us before they lose their money (yes,
there have been several occassions to date where he has cashed checks
for software he no longer has the ability to distribute -- those people
have been fleeced quite nicely).
Q: Do you accept credit cards?
A: Yes. We currently accept both Visa and MasterCard.
